Introduction

This is part 1 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

Gameweek 34 summary:

Well what a strange gameweek that was !! Vestergard sent off after 10 mins but Vardy & Iheanacho failing to find the net against ten men, Spurs winning 4-0 but Kane not involved in any of them, Gareth Bale scoring a hat trick, Havertz and Antonio scoring twice, but all the headlines were from the postponed Man Utd v Liverpool game which wiped out FPL teams and left everyone scratching around for points off every available sub !!

My GW34 score and rank:

35 points. Just three returns from Son, Iheanacho and Veltman, the latter from last place on my bench, which certainly rescued me from a far worse fate. 9 points off my bench came in very handy this week, in which just nine of my players made it on to the pitch including my subs, after I had four miss out at Old Trafford and Rudiger was injured.

My recent run of red arrows continued, 4 in the last 5 weeks, after what had been a run of 20 greens in 23 weeks before it, which had put me within 2 points of the coveted top 10k. Down this week from 24k to 28k. Four weeks left to push on for a strong finish and I am still in a good place. So let’s stay positive.

My GW34 talking points:

The events at Old Trafford obviously impacted all of us. I had four players involved which was fairly standard. Most will have been on Salah and Fernandes. I was on Shaw which was a tough potential clean sheet, and Jota who was benched, so the fact they all missed out possibly helped me with Veltman coming off last sub and my 9 points was above what most auto subs produced.

Harry Kane blanking against Sheff Utd was a tough one. Many had gambled on Kane to Vardy in GW33 with him playing and Kane not, and Vardy doubling in GW35. So this was a chance to really punish those who gambled without Kane in this fixture and who were left squirming at Kane’s effective ownership of 160%+ including armbands. He certainly had the chances but he just didn’t have his shooting boots on this week.

A goal and assist from Son was crucial in a low scoring week, he also had another flagged offside too. Ironically, many of those who gambled Vardy over Kane put the armband on Son as a hedge so they came out smelling of roses in a game that could have gone terribly wrong !! Having said that, Vardy blanked too playing 80 minutes against 10 men, so on the flip side I think I got away with that one too !!

My two big 50/50 calls I wrestled with all week proved irrelevant. I chose Dallas over Coady but still got them both and they both blanked anyway. I chose Jota over Bamford but still got Bamford who blanked. So all irrelevant in the end. The one player nailed firmly to last place on my bench, Veltman, produced 6 points that was frustrating at the time but which I eventually got !!!

Blanks from Martinez, Lingard, Coady, Dallas and Bamford summed up a disappointing week. Leeds in particular were poor and Bamford was hauled off before 60 minutes. No clean sheet in 7 games now for Martinez who is rapidly going from hero to zero !!

So what next:

After carrying the transfer last week, I have two frees this week but with zero in the bank.

I wanted the flexibility of having two frees for the double GW35 and blank GW36 which now follows. As I am writing this, it’s still to be confirmed where the Man Utd v Liverpool game goes, but it seems likely it goes to GW36, with Liverpool v West Brom moving to GW35, which would significantly help in bringing Liverpool into the list of teams doubling in GW35, and meaning Man Utd don’t blank as planned in GW36, significantly helping navigate the blank too !!

If the above plays out, then i would have 7 players doubling in the upcoming GW35. With two frees, I would plan to increase that to 9 doublers, keeping Kane and Son as my two singles in my starting 11.

I would have only Rudiger and Iheanacho blanking in GW36, if Fernandes and Shaw were to get the rearranged GW36 fixture. So I could field a useful 12 in GW36 with one free transfer.

If it doesn’t play out that way, I can only get up to 7 doubles in GW35, and only have 10 playing in GW36, so it would be much more of a challenge.

My likely transfers:

The only player I don’t own in my own definition of “template” using ownership of players amongst my trusted managers, is Trent. I don’t have an obvious way to get him without losing one of my strong midfield four of Salah, Jota, Son or Fernandes. I don’t want to sell my Liverpool duo ahead of a potential double gameweek, or Bruno before a double, and Son seems to be hitting form.

I can however “cover the clean sheet “ of Liverpool by getting in Phillips instead. He was named in the starting line up at Old Trafford. I can get him in for Veltman, who seems to be keeping clean sheets now, or bring him in for Coady, with Wolves conceding goals. Coady to Phillips gets me extra cash too to fund my second transfer !!

I would love Calvert Lewin as he has a double gameweek next and strong fixtures after it too. But he is out of my price range as a third striker alongside Kane and Nacho. I could lose Lingard but I am not keen to lose a solid template player. So I have my eyes on bringing in Watkins, who is back amongst the goals and who I feel owes me one after a string of blanks when I had him. His double and his fixtures are not great but it’s an extra doubler.

Bamford probably has better fixtures than Watkins, but Bamford has failed to find the net in 8 of the last 9, and is getting subbed off early too. Leeds have badly missed Raphinha. So Bamford to Watkins for the double looks a decent option

I will need to keep a close eye on the fitness of Rudiger who was injured at the weekend but could return midweek v Madrid. That could change my plans if he is still out. If Liverpool don’t get the double in GW35, I might also need to look at Everton for the double too, especially if more teams blank in GW36. So nothing is set in stone yet.

I currently have my “power five” in midfield which means having to bench one of them to play my third striker, which is a real headache. And if I get Phillips in alongside Rudiger and Shaw, it means sitting Dallas on the bench too when he has good fixtures ahead, but we saw from the events of Old Trafford the value of a strong bench. It’s not a bad problem to have.

My GW35 line up:

If the doubles and blanks drop as hoped, I will captain Salah if he gets a double.

I would have potentially 9 doublers plus Kane and Son v Leeds. I would have to bench Lingard this week which is not ideal, but I would rather have two games of Watkins

Transfer summary:

Potentially Coady to Phillips, and Bamford to Watkins.

Here is the squad if I make the changes :

Good luck everyone, and no postponements please !!!

My team this week is largely dependent on whether Liverpool get a double. The team below is set up on the assumption they do. My benching decision will then be 2 choices: 1. Son or Lingard and 2. Holding, Rudiger or Lindelof. At the moment it’s Holding and Lingard on the bench but it’s a coin toss really. Then it’s whether to have the doubling defender as first sub or the attacker. At the moment it’s the doubling defender but I’d imagine that will change. Captain would be Salah with vice on Nacho.

If Liverpool don’t get a double, I’d imagine Lingard will come back into my team and Jota will go to first sub or I may bring the doubling defender in. Captain would likely be Nacho with vice on DCL.

I have 2 free transfers this week. I don’t think my transfer will be affected by any announcement about the Liverpool double. I’ll only be making 1 transfer at most so that I have 2 available to navigate the blank in GW36. I have 1.3m in the bank. I was thinking of keeping that so that I could do Vardy out, Kane in for GW36 (it would also require Holding out and Mitchell in to have sufficient funds). Now I’m not sure about it. Is just having Son enough so that Kane isn’t needed?

It would also leave me with a bench of Struijk, Mitchell and one attacker, not ideal. So I’m now thinking Vardy to Antonio, Bamford or someone like that. So that means I could spend the 1.3m on, say, Struijk to Dallas or Coufal who would then be on the bench this week but have good fixtures going forward. Or possibly bring in an Everton defender for their double and then Sheffield United in GW36. But Everton are not great defensively and with the exception of Digne there’s the spectre of rotation. I’ll likely go Struijk to Dallas or Coufal (if I had the funds, Cresswell would be a consideration too).

Enjoy the game week everyone.

As of now I don’t know the MUN/LFC fixture.

I will likely roll. I may start Konsa over ESR.

If I did anything it would be Bamford to Watkins, or Konsa to Ward. I don’t love either though.

Having two free transfers next week would allow me to use Vardy’s money to make a big change. Perhaps to bring Kane in or to upgrade Smith Rowe to Lingard.

Captain: Bruno
Vice: Vardy
