There have been a few things happening in relation to a timetable for the Premier League restarting so I thought it was worth a short post to outline this if you weren’t aware.

The Premier Leagues “Project Restart”

The Premier League is hopeful of a potential 8 June restart and finishing at the end of July to fit in with Uefa’s European competition plans. This, apparently, would require full training to begin by 18 May.

The Government seems broadly supportive but any restart would have to meet their approval in line with conditions at the time.  A restart would involve a significant amount of testing of players and entourages of various sorts.  If there is a perception that this would prejudice testing elsewhere needed, especially from essential workers.

The games would obviously be behind closed doors and there are thoughts that they would be free to air in the UK at least to stop people going to other peoples houses to watch games.

Uefa have said to the  European leagues that they have until 25 May to tell Uefa whether they want to complete or cancel their seasons.

There is a perceived issue around whether the preseason time is sufficient for player fitness and to help out with that Fifa announced on Monday that it would advocate the temporary introduction of up to five substitutions per team. These could be made in a maximum of three in-game slots and at half-time.

It’s worth stressing that nothing is certain as yet and the overall pandemic conditions and safety will be the overriding  factors in the decision making.

What is happening around Europe

The French government has announced that  professional football cannot return in the country until September and the 2019-20 season in Ligue 1 and 2 will therefore end immediately.

The Bundesliga is planning on restarting on the 9 May although it still needs Government ratification

In Spain football is on hold indefinitely but  Spain’s national sports council has said training can resume if clubs comply with strict health protocols.  Early June has been touted as a potential restart date for La Liga matches but nothing has been confirmed.

Serie A sides will be allowed to return to individual training on 4 May and team training on 18 May after the Italian prime minister announced the first steps in lifting the country’s coronavirus lockdown.  There are hopes Serie A fixtures could resume between 27 May and 2 June – with an end date for the season of early August.  However, there has not yet been a formal announcement on the possibility of when Serie A might resume, even behind closed doors.

This BBC article which I’ve done some copying and pasting from is quite a handy reference point.

How would fantasy premier league react to this?

Who knows how they will structure the rest of the season?  If you had asked me how they would react to the suspension before GW30 the last thing I would have thought of is they continue with the gameweeks despite there being no games?

All I hope is that they add on extra gameweeks rather than just continue as they are and dump every game (9 gameweeks!) into GW38.  My personal preference would be to add in the extra gameweeks and play them 1 gameweek at a time.  There is the 2 additional games for a double gameweek in Man City v Arsenal and Aston Villa v Sheffield Utd.

Sorry can’t add anything to that.

I hope you found that useful.  If you have anything to add or correct please do so in the comments
