Firstly tell us a bit about yourself away from FPL?

I am 49 years old, married + 3 (children are 21, 18 and 14, 2 girls and a boy). I live in Oxford and am investing in technology companies. I am an AFC Bournemouth supporter and I am very happy they are back in the Premier league (although I am not picking any of their players in my team for GW1).

I am really excited being part of the FFGeek!.

How long have you been playing FPL, how did you get into it and what is your motivation?

I only played FPL for 3 1/2 years. In my 3 full years I finished 5k, 6k and top 300 last season.

My son introduced me to the game, and while on vacation in the Maldives a few years ago, we spent a lot of time on his team. This is when I decided to have my own team (it was mid season). So it started as a way to spend more time with my son, and over the last 3 years, became a bit of an obsession for me.

What is your playing strategy?

Overall, I am not a big risk taker. I will usually have many of the template players and will have 2-3 punts. I tend to lean on the strong teams in defence (City, Liverpool, Chelsea). I usually play 442 or 451 but may go heavier on defence to start this season.

For some reason I usually keep most of the chips for later in the season, as a way to get advantage towards the end line. It worked well for me in the last few years.

I usually start with a very templated team with the aim of being in the top 100k for the first part of the season while keeping all my chips and then I am pushing hard.

Are there any players you think will definitely be in your GW1 team for 22/23 through all the tinkering?

I am set on a few players: Mendy, Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo, Salah. They will definitely be in my starting team.

Your best / worst FPL moment?

I have a few best moments. Last year bringing in and captaining Bruno Fernandes for his 20+ haul and getting into the top 250 in the last gameweek was a fantastic achievement. But the best moments are really when I am sitting with the kids (now both my son and daughter are obsessed with FPL) before the deadline to discuss the different options.

The worst moment was changing the captain from De Bruyne to Salah late last year, at the last minute. I calculated that it cost me around 75 places.

Your favourite FPL player and your nightmare FPL player

Best are Son and Coufal(!). Son is clear, he always delivers for me. With Coufal, for whatever reason, every time I have him, he delivers the goods.

I do have some players that I have no luck with. James, while a good FPL asset, almost always disappoint me when in my team. Foden is another one that will always get 1-3 points when I have him in the team…

Your first draft GW1 team

Best FPL Managers

Goalkeeper

Mendy for 5m is the best price/performance in my opinion, Top team, good fixtures. This is assuming Chelsea are getting 1-2 top defenders to replace Rudiger, Christensen, etc

Defence

Alexander-Arnold and Cancelo are in. For the rest I am looking at 1 Arsenal (now Zinchenko has gone it will be him), and either double Chelsea (Chilwell), Spurs (Perisic) or double City (Dias). Then a playing £4.0m (Neco Williams or Patterson for Everton)

Midfield

I am taking a punt on Rashford (assuming he is showing good form pre-season). Salah and Diaz for double Liverpool (I may end up going Robertson in defence and then a £5-£5.5m instead of Diaz. In this case I will start with 532 formation). Neto is at a good price point, and Andreas Pereira is good as bench fodder

Forwards

Jesus is great value at £8.0m. I will then start with Kane and may change to Haaland for game 2.
There is no doubt I will change my team many times before GW1 and will provide an update close to the deadline.
