Another season begins! I took as long a break as I could, but it’s time to finally get in the mix and start to explore with some drafts.

My current one could very well change by the GW1 deadline, depending on pre season games and news, but I like it as things stand.

I usually prefer to start the season with a 4-4-2 formation as I believe it is the most flexible and can easily be changed if required. However my current formation is 4-5-1, mainly in order to include Mahrez whom I really want (given City don’t sign another winger). The alternative is going 4-4-2 with Jesus and a £4.5m mid instead of Mahrez. I like both Mahrez and Jesus very much but can’t see a reasonable way to accommodate them both in my squad.

Other players in my watchlist, who may be included by the time of GW1 deadline (players more likely to end up in my squad in bold):

Kane

Jesus

Son

Mount

Saka

Foden

Robertson

James

Perisic

Trippier

Neto

Ramsdale

Sergio Torija

Sergio’s last 6 seasons overall ranks were 45k, 262k 2k, 596k, 17k and 21k

The starting structure seems the clearer thing so far, with a strong defence supported by two playable 4.5 defenders; Salah, an 8m mid, plus a couple in the 5 to 7 range, and a 4.5 sub in midfield, with Haaland and Jessus up top. Going without Salah, Haaland and Jesus seems too much risk (although I am not discarding to start with Kane with a switch to Haaland in week 2).

The obvious notable omission is Alexander Arnold, but Robertson feels equally safe and I am not planning to double up on any defence other than maybe Arsenal that have a couple decent 4.5 options.

In midfield, all my players other than Salah is where things could change the most in my team. Mount could be Luis Diaz or Grealish. Dewsbury Hall could become Neto or Aaronson or Bailey or Martinelli. Even I am not sold in Andreas but if I end up with a £4.5m Mid he’s the best of the bunch so far.

In attack, the other thought to consider is to start with someone like Mitrovic or Solanke, and downgrade Grealish to someone cheaper.

Key game to watch with interest is the Community Shield between Liverpool and City in a about 10 days time.
